Space Mountain Queue and Loading Area Revealed!!!

November 10, 2009 11:45 am

From the Disney Parks Blog:

When renovation work finishes on the Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World Resort, it’ll be the same classic experience with a few new surprises. And now, Walt Disney Imagineering is offering an early peek at some of those surprises and the first images from inside the attraction.
Space Mountain
As you know, with any Imagineering project, the story comes first. And the updated Space Mountain attraction at Walt Disney World Resort is no exception. With the update, the storyline is being extended – and you’ll be able to take part.

Passengers will be able to immerse themselves in unique game play as they prepare for blast off, becoming part of the space station adventure. During a recent walkthrough, we deflected asteroids to keep runways clear as part of the story.

The interactive experiences are based on duties you’d find on board a long-traveling space craft, according to Walt Disney Imagineering Senior Show Designer Alex Wright. Each game lasts about 90 seconds with a 90-second interval and the games can accommodate 86 players at one time.
Video Games in Space Mountain Stand By Line
As you move along on your journey, there are “insider” touches typical in projects created by Imagineers. For example, if you’re up on your Disney trivia, you’ll recognize a sign bearing the logo “H-NCH 1975″ as a tribute to late Imagineer and Disney legend John Hench. There are also other “Disneyphile” references hidden throughout the attraction.

Space Mountain celebrates the Golden Age of Rocket Travel – inspired by the jet age of the early 1960s. The attraction highlights excitement around the endless possibilities regarding space travel. It did back when it opened in 1975 and I think you’ll agree it still does.

We wanted to share these images now but check back for more updates.

  1. Oh....wow... Man....It looks absolutely brilliant.....I'm in awe.....
The enclosed (!) loading area looks fantastic! I love how we will be getting an actual storyline as well. Hopefully, the Star Tunnel BGM will remain.
    11 days and counting.
  2. This whole Space Mountain refurbishment seems very underwhelming to me. Closed for 7 months, and all that's new is a new roof, HD projections, and games in the queue (which I can't see working very well with guests stopping all the time). The ride looks like it'll be the same, and I'm sorry, but Disneyland's is still best.
  3. That all looks really cool. Question: can you choose which track you go on in SM like the Matterhorn or is it whichever line the Cast Member directs you too?

More than DL can say. It took 3 years for them to do that over there.

Wrong and wrong again Mr. Manning. The ride itself is looking to be much darker and no doubt much smoother.
I hope for it to wind up as smooth as Everest is.
WDW has the best Space Mt. It's the original, the best, and the bestest.

Depends on the queue lenth. Most times, you get sent to Omega.

That's because we completely re-built our track and composed a brand new score for the attraction.

Disneyland's is already as dark and smooth as can possibly be.

They re-built the track here as well Luke. And they could have recorded the new score months before the refurb.

I believe only parts in dire need of replacement were replaced. I could be wrong though.

The entire track on both sides were replaced

In 5 months? I find that hard to believe.

Me too, but WDI surprises us all!
  11. It also depends if you have a fass pass or not. do have a fass pass you go the loading platform to your right and if not you will go to your left. I always riden with a fast pass and once time with out one and it was a totally different experience riding in the front seat in the front rocket than seating in the very back.

This is true. I always go FP, and always get on Omega, except 2 times when I got Alpha. The first time was random, and the 2nd time was because I was there on the last day it was open in April. They had the regular queue wrap around Alpha, then go to Omega and FP go strait to Alpha.
I also always get the first car, first seat. That may be because it's only me and my brother.
    T-minus ten days!
  13. You get to choose your side on Space Mountain regardless of Fastpass or not, depending only on if both sides are operating.

Hate to correct you Luke, but the refurb is much more. New loading area roof, loading gates, queue games for about 100 guests at a time, smoother and darker ride experience, new HD projections in the mountain, a new exit ramp with plenty to look at, fresh paint and more on the exterior, and on-ride photo. There may even be a few surprises

The roof is nice, but is hardly a huge deal, same goes even more so for loading gates. The games still seem like they will destroy the line, in that people won't keep the line moving because they're too busy playing the games. We have a smooth and dark ride already, as well as HD projections and a fresh paint job thanks to the wonderful thing that a holiday overlay is. And from the looks of things from the TTA, the post-show is pretty much the same. ;)

I agree. With the ride newly refurbished, the lines will be long enough. I'm a bit worried about lines taking twice as long because too many people won't be able to tear themselves away from a video game screen. We'll have to see, I guess.

The roof is a huge deal! Without the new roof, those projections look sloppy and skewed.

Even more important. There is constant seat swapping and re-swapping.There is just a ledge, fall off and your on the tracks. Not very safe. Many people try to get into the rocket before they can, posing a major safety issue. The gates are very important!

I agree. But does the line even stop long enough to play the games? Will the screens be large enough for all too see?

That is a disappointment. On the plus side, it means that scene that was in SSE 94' will remain there, more or less intact.
Hopefully, 'Star Tunnel' wont drown out the 'SM05 exit music' when it re-opens.

    Why would it?

Currently, (or previously?) whenever you would pass that open-ceiling scene on the speedramp, the Star Tunnel loop being played on the TTA would be much louder than the awesome SM05 remix that would play on the speedramp. It got annoying. My two favorite Space Mt. tracks competing.....I just wanna hear one!
Plus, if Star Tunnel doesn't drown it out, that must mean it's playing.
  19. I've heard that the astronauts are back on SP. Can can anyone confirm?

  20. I'm confused!

Disneyland got an all new track that provides a smooth but zippy ride through space. The ride vehicles also have speakers added playing an awsome score by "Incredibles" composer Michael Giaccino. What did we get...new colors, decor and a much needed clean up. Why does the Florida Magic Kingdom continue to receive less attention than our west coast counterpart?

When they use the term "same track layout" on the Disney Blog, that implies that there is new track in the same layout.
  21. Disneyland's space was also closed for just about 2 years. WDW only closed 7 months. If we saw a complete track replacement it would probably take double that to replace both sides of the attraction.

I think it's because they wanted to retain the 1975 charm. They wanted it to remain the original Mt, and not some high-tech monster of a Mt. It's similar to how Walt Disney Classic were touched up in DL for the 50th Celebration.

Thank you! Someone finally agrees with me.
