“Lights of Winter” at Epcot Officially Retired

November 11, 2009 5:50 pm

The popular “Lights of Winter” holiday display at Epcot will not be returning this year. The Disney Parks twitter had the following to say about the change:

The Lights of Winter at Epcot has been enjoyed for years. But (technology) to operate the lights is obsolete, prompting us to retire the lights.

To replace the offering with something new, the Disney Parks Twitter then announced the following:

Debuting at this year’s Holidays Around the World at Epcot is a new gospel choir, “D’Vine Voices” – Nov. 27 through Dec. 26.

The dancing light arches of “Lights of Winter” have been a part of the “Holidays Around the World” program since it debuted in the early 1990’s, but the technology was easily surpassed a few years ago when the Osborne Family Lights at Disney’s Hollywood Studios began to dance to music every 15 minutes. This change comes on the heels of the 2008 departure of the tree lighting ceremony at Epcot. Expect the passage to World Showcase to be rather un-festive this year.

  1. How sad. I can understand though, why keep something out-of-date in Epcot, a park about the future? Hopefully, we will get some new lights....Imagine, all the countries lit up in green and red....
They were an eyesore during the day anyway.

Yeah, but so are the Christmas lights on Cinderella Castle and the Obsourne Lights.
  3. You don't know what you'll miss until it is gone, I guess. My family was disappointed to hear this news. Without thinking of it, we enjoyed those lights more than we would have thought.
  4. I for one am sad to see the arch ways go. It was one of the things I was looking forward to seeing in Epcot when I go on 12/1. If they knew they were becoming out of date why couldn't they do something to upgrade them. I am very dissappointed.
  5. I'm very dissapointed in this. My wife will never get to see them :(

Says the one who loves giant plastic icicles on his castle. I will half agree with you on the Obsourne Lights. They are noticeable, but not too noticeable. They dont stick out like sore thumbs.

They look very nice during the day.

Lets not get started on this again Luke. (mostly because they don't look good during the day...) All that matters is that these lights were not day-time decorations, they were night time wonders. It wasn't lights on a building, it was a structure of it's own.
  9. Some people created a facebook group to try and help bring it back:

Oh great, Mr. Toad all over again. I don't know, it will be odd without them, and they do look very good. Epcot has no real other big lights. Maybe I'll join in.
